Do not use polyurethane. Do not use outdoors, where it is exposed to UV rays. Worse than worse and worse, the color of the wood. Varnish is best. There is a good clear yellow coating without damaging the side faces. He is the best surface for a wooden door or the like. I have my wood, west, veneer kitchen doors in 86 and still looks great. Spar varnish you can buy to store each color, home center or hardware store.
EDIT: I tried Marine Spar polyurethane front of my house three years ago. It is in very bad condition and I am preparing down and rebuilt. Spar varnish is much higher.
You can order products such as Minwax Clear Shield or Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane.
